Quetzals live in tropical forests across Central America. However, these beautiful, colorful birds are Guatemala’s national bird. The bird, which is part of Mesoamerican mythology, is prominently featured on Guatemala’s flag.

These majestic birds are on near-threatened status on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. This is partly due to the fact that people capture or kill these birds, but mostly because their homes continue disappearing.
